Black Soldier Fly - Hermetia illucens - Card
Black Soldier Fly
Reproduced from an original watercolour painting by Cheryl Hodges
Greeting card 10 x 15cm, blank inside with white envelope
Text on reverse of card reads:
These are large soldier flies, 15-20mm long, with a wasp-like appearance. They are black with white on their tarsi, the abdomen has translucent areas and the wings have a metallic sheen.
Black soldier fly larvae are produced and processed in insect ‘farms’ or ‘factories’. The larvae consume food waste (preventing this waste from going to landfill), their frass is used as a soil fertiliser and the larvae become a high protein food source used in pet food, animal feed and aquaculture.
