Polyzosteria mitchelli, commonly known as Mitchell’s cockroach or Mardi Gras cockroach, is a striking native Australian species found in dry inland regions. Unlike household cockroaches, this one lives outdoors and is beautifully coloured - its body gleams with shades of metallic blue, green, or purple. It is flightless and is active during the day (diurnal). It sprays a pungent defensive fluid from glands in its abdomen when disturbed. Polyzosteria mitchelli feeds mainly on decaying plant matter, helping to recycle nutrients into the soil. Harmless to humans and rarely seen, it plays an important ecological role while adding a touch of shimmering colour to Australia’s arid landscapes.
