Original watercolour painting - Blue Eyes Lacewing
An original watercolour painting of a Blue Eyes Lacewing, Nymphes myrmeleonides, an Australian native insect. Mat size is 8" x 10" inches (20.3cm x 25cm) so it can go straight into a standard sized frame. The image size (white area inside the mat) is 6.5” x 4.5” inches.
Here is a little bit about the insect and the painting:
I love painting plants and insects, especially the latter as they are often overlooked.
Unlike dragonflies which are masters of flight, the lacewing is a pretty clumsy flyer. I have seen them occasionally on bushwalks, and when disturbed they 'flutter' for a few metres then hang off a twig. Lacewings come in many sizes and colours, and I love that the green lacewing larvae is utilised as biocontrol for aphids, mealybugs and scale insects as they are voracious predators (and they look it). This particular insect is the Blue Eyes Lacewing Nymphes myrmeleonides, it's at the larger end of the scale and has little white tips at the end of its wings. Their abdomens don't seem to last well as specimens, so I had to refer to other specimens and to photos online and in text books. The specimen I chose to paint also had an underdeveloped wing - which I could have painted but I decided to paint this as a 'typical' specimen. Because this is a smallish painting I also chose to add a little iridescent medium to give the wings a lift.
Purchasing an unframed painting is an affordable way to obtain an original painting without the cost of posting the frame, and you can then choose your own style of frame to suit your taste and decor. Please note colours may be slightly different to what appears on your screen.
Price includes postage in Australia, by Australia Post.
