Bring a touch of nature wherever you go. These button pins feature original illustrations inspired by Australia’s native insects — perfect for adding a natural accent to your day. Pin them to your jacket, shirt, or tote bag, or decorate your hat, backpack, or lanyard with a touch of nature.. They also make lovely gifts or thoughtful additions to cards and wrapping, or can be displayed on a pinboard or fabric banner as a mini gallery of your favourite designs.
Blue Banded Bee (Amegilla asserta) round pinback button. Tinplate round button badge with plastic backing. 37mm wide.
Designed by Cheryl Hodges based on her original painting.
Buzz pollination, also called sonication, is especially performed by bees in the Amegilla family (including blue banded bees). The bee clings to a flower and rapidly vibrates its flight muscles, producing a distinctive high-pitched buzz. The vibration causes the flower to release its pollen. Buzz pollination is crucial for plants that have evolved to release their pollen in this way, for example tomatoes, blueberries, and eggplants.
Although blue banded bees dart around very quickly, you may occasionally find them resting on a stem. If you look closely you might be able to tell if it’s male or female. Males have five blue stripes and females have four.
1 pin $6.00, or save with 3 pins $15.00
